Small Exhibition “From Our Rare Book Collection” (May 2019)

This month we are displaying Narrative of the Earl of Elgin’s mission to China and Japan in the years 1857, ’58, ’59, published in Edinburgh in 1859

Laurence Oliphant (1829-1888) visited China and Japan at the end of the Edo Period as part of the mission led by the diplomat James Bruce, 8th Earl of Elgin, who had been appointed as an envoy to conclude the Treaty of Tientsin with China and the Treaty of Amity and Commerce with Japan. This book provides a detailed account of those visits, based on record kept by Oliphant.
