Small Exhibition “From Our Rare Book Collection” (January 2016)
This month’s book to be displayed is “Journal of three voyages along the coast of China in 1831, 1832, & 1833: with notices of Siam, Corea, and the Loo-choo islands,” published in London in 1834.
The author, Karl Friedrich August Gützlaff (1803-1851), is a German missionary who engaged in Christian missionary work in the Orient, including Thailand and China. He translated the oldest remaining Japanese edition of the Bible called “Yohane Fukuin No Den” [The Gospel of St. John] (1837). As an interpreter he was aboard the ship Morrison that was bombarded under the Japanese feudal government’s Edict to Repel Foreign Vessels (Morrison Incident, 1837). This book contains a record of his visit to the Ryukyu Islands.
