[Announcement]The worldwide-blockbuster film "Suzume" premiere screening will be held in India! ~In April, Director Makoto Shinkai and Indian anime fans will reunite for the first time since 2019~

April 10 2023

The Japan Foundation (JF) will hold a premiere screening for Indian fans in conjunction with the April 21st release of the new film, "Suzume," directed by Makoto Shinkai. This project will be carried out in Mumbai on April 19th and 20th of this year as part of the Japanese Film Festival (JFF) held by the JF mainly in Asia. Director Makoto Shinkai and Comic artist Denki Amashima will take the stage after the screening of the film to meet and greet their Indian fans.

This will be Shinkai's first visit to India since 2019, when he attended the opening of the JFF for the premiere screening of his previous film, "Weathering With You." He had said, "I want to come back to India in about three years to show everyone a new film. See you again." This will be the fulfilment of his promise to his fans of "revisiting India."

Three years ago, more than 56,000 petitions by fans demanding the theatrical release of "Weathering With You" in India made it the first Japanese anime film to be released nationwide. This acted as a catalyst for the subsequent release in India of a succession of animated films, such as "Demon Slayer," "Jujutsu Kaisen" and "One Piece Film Red." Interest in Japanese Pop Culture has been growing year after year.
In addition to the meet & greet after the screening, the JF will also conduct an autograph session and workshop to meet the eager anticipation of Japanese animation fans in India.
