[Announcement]Exhibition Chiharu Shiota: Between Worlds To Be Held at the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art

Commemorative event of the centennial anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Türkiye

August 28, 2024

The Japan Foundation (JF) will host the exhibition Chiharu Shiota Between Worlds from Friday, September 6, 2024, to Sunday, April 20, 2025, in partnership with the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art in Türkiye
The exhibition, which will be held as a project to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Türkiye, is a solo exhibition of works by contemporary artist SHIOTA Chiharu. Shiota creates works inspired by her own personal experiences and emotions, which she elevates into universal themes such as human existence or life and death.
Shiota is based in Berlin and presents her works worldwide. She describes herself as existing “in-between” and explains that while living in Germany and traveling all over the world for exhibitions, she came to realize things that were not visible or perceptible to her when she lived in Japan. The city of Istanbul, which has developed its own unique culture while integrating those of both Asia and Europe, can also be said to exist on the “borderline” between two continents. In this exhibition, Shiota represents her observations and impressions of the city of Istanbul and of the building of the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art, which serves as the venue, through installations and canvases with the recurring motif of suitcases.

About the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art

The Istanbul Museum of Modern Art opened in 2004 as Türkiye’s first museum dedicated to modern and contemporary art. It collects and exhibits a wide range of works by artists from around the world, with a special focus on Turkish artists. The museum reopened in 2023 following renovations with a new building designed by the architect Renzo Piano, which features exhibition galleries on the second and third floors. The diverse exhibition formats include pop-up galleries as well as temporary and permanent exhibitions. In addition to exhibitions, various programs such as lectures and workshops are hosted in the underground auditorium. The museum also serves as one of the main venues for the Istanbul Biennial.
