Exhibition ‘Chiharu Shiota: Between Worlds’ at Istanbul Modern
The Japan Foundation (JF) is pleased to announce the Chiharu Shiota: Between Worlds exhibition, co-organized with the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art (Istanbul Modern).
This exhibition is being held in commemoration of the Centenary of the Establishment of Japan and Türkiye Diplomatic Relations (2024), and is a solo exhibition by Chiharu Shiota (recipient of the Japan Foundation Award 2024), who has held exhibitions around the world.
Shiota visited Istanbul prior to the exhibition and drew inspiration from the city, as well as from her own experiences of traveling around the world, to expand her image for the exhibition. She was particularly impressed by Istanbul’s characteristics as a city where East and West have come together to create a unique culture, and the ships docked in the harbor beside Istanbul Modern.
The exhibition includes an installation that uses suitcases, an essential travel item, as a motif, and a new work created exclusively for the exhibition in which threads are stretched across canvases.

About the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art
The Istanbul Museum of Modern Art opened in 2004 as Türkiye’s first museum dedicated to modern and contemporary art. It collects and exhibits a wide range of works by artists from around the world, with a special focus on Turkish artists. The museum reopened in 2023 following renovations with a new building designed by the architect Renzo Piano, which features exhibition galleries on the second and third floors. The diverse exhibition formats include pop-up galleries as well as temporary and permanent exhibitions. In addition to exhibitions, various programs such as lectures and workshops are hosted in the underground auditorium. The museum also serves as one of the main venues for the Istanbul Biennial.
