On Friday, September 29, 2023, “JF-GJS Initiative: Japan Foundation Fellow Conference 2023” was held jointly with the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia of the University of Tokyo (Tobunken). Approximately 60 participants, including JF Fellows in the Tokyo metropolitan area, their advisors, and faculty members of Tobunken, gathered and created a meaningful platform for exchange. In the first session, titled “Japan in Asia,” JF Fellows presented their research, chaired by professors of Tobunken. During the following networking session, mutual interests, concerns, the profiles of the participants shared in advance led to various exchanges, and after forming groups based on similar areas of interest, the participants engaged in lively discussions, enhancing the overall exchange of ideas. The comments at the concluding session by the JF-GJS Fellows, who are conducting research under the pilot project jointly organized by JF and Tobunken, provided insight that this conference became a rich and fulfilling experience. Among the post-survey responses were: "[This was] a wonderful initiative for meeting new researchers”; “At big conferences, it is sometimes hard to get to know new people, but JF really makes it easy and smooth to mingle with others.” The connections made during this event are expected to contribute to the fellow’s future networking endeavors.
