Sibiu International Theatre Festival

The Sibiu International Theater Festival and the Radu Stanca Sibiu National Theater are delighted to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Japan Foundation Awards. I was honored to receive, in 2015, this very important distinction and I recall that very unique moment, when I had the opportunity to visit the Imperial Palace and to meet, for almost one hour, with the then-Crowned Prince, current-Majesty Naruhito Emperor of Japan.

In its 30 years of existence, the Festival brought to Sibiu more than 100 renowned companies from Japan, all of them having a great success. More than 250 volunteers from Japan have been present to the Sibiu International Theatre Festival, yearly, from 2004 until now.

I want to continue our fruitful cooperation and to highlight the strategic partnership between the Sibiu International Theater Festival, the Radu Stanca Sibiu National Theater and the great Japanese culture.

In 2024 we will have a co-production between the Sibiu International Theater Festival, the Radu Stanca Sibiu National Theater and the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, in which we will produce a show that will tour the major festivals in Europe in June-July 2024, with Kuranosuke Sasaki in the main role, directed by Silviu Purcărete, scenography by Dragoș Buhagiar, music by Vasile Şirli.

These are powerful projects and programs that we have been developing for more than 30 years. The partnership with the Japan Foundation is, from our point of view, crucial and very strong.
