Book Launch: From Postwar to Postmodern, Art in Japan 1945-1989: Primary Documents

Cover of From Postwar to Postmodern, Art in Japan 1945-1989 In celebration of the launch of new publication of The Museum of Modern Art, New York (MoMA), From Postwar to Postmodern, Art in Japan 1945-1989: Primary Documents, the Japan Foundation and MoMA will host a panel discussion with important artists and thinkers from Japan representing distinct generations of Japanese postwar art history. This volume gathers texts that are critical to a deeper understanding of postwar Japanese art, the majority of which have been translated into English for the first time. These translations are complemented by contextual essays and newly-commissioned texts by Japan and US-based scholars.

The event, which will be open to the public, will consist of a series of discussions moderated by the co-editors of the book and curators at MoMA—Doryun Chong, Associate Curator in MoMA’s Painting & Sculpture department; Michio Hayashi, Professor in the Faculty of Liberal Arts, Sophia University; Fumihiko Sumitomo, independent curator, Tokyo; Kenji Kajiya, Assistant Professor of the Hiroshima City University; and Sarah Suzuki, Associate Curator at MoMA. Guest speakers include scholars, curators and artists including Hiroshi Nakamura, Yuri Mitsuda, Lee Ufan, Akira Tatehata, Arata Isozaki, Taro Igarashi, Koki Tanaka and Mika Kuraya.
