The Japan Foundation Japan-China Curator Exchange Program Symposium
“Contemporary art in China: Latest reports”

The Japan Foundation is constantly working to increase interest in and understanding of contemporary Japanese art and to stimulate exchanges between Japan and other countries in the area of contemporary art. Today, interest in contemporary art is growing strongly in China. The Japan Foundation has invited a number of experts from China to visit Japan and is organizing a symposium as part of this exchange program.

Since the opening of the Power Station of Art in Shanghai in 2012, the number of art museums in China that are active in the area of contemporary art has continued to grow. The market for postwar and contemporary art in China is also expanding and attracting increasing attention.

This symposium will hear reports from invited curators working in Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Chongqing, and other Chinese cities about the situation for contemporary art in their respective cities. In addition to discussing experiences and comparing the situation for contemporary art in China with that in Japan, participants will be able to share ideas on future trends and developments in contemporary art in both countries and discuss the potential for contemporary Asian art in a global context.
