Invitation Program for Expert in Performing Arts in 2025: Invitation of Students from the Indonesian Institute of the Arts, Surakarta
As part of the "Partnership to Co-create a Future with the Next Generation: WA Project 2.0,” a comprehensive people-to-people exchange program aimed at promoting exchange and fostering members of the next generation in Japan and ASEAN—the Japan Foundation (JF) is inviting 10 students from the Department of Dance at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts, Surakarta, to Okinawa for an exchange program with students studying Ryukyuan performing arts at the Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts. Additionally, with the cooperation of National Theatre Okinawa, Shiroma Bingata Studio, and other partners, the program offers a multifaceted experience to learn about Okinawa’s traditional culture through lecture-demonstrations by leading Ryukyu Buyo performers and a workshop led by a Bingata artisan. This program serves as a follow-up initiative to further develop the cultural ties built during the "Ryukyu Buyo Performance in Indonesia -Court Dances Bound by the Sea-," held in 2025. It is hoped that this exchange will serve as a foundation for the students’ future endeavors as these representatives of the next generation—who carry forward traditional cultures inherited across the sea in Okinawa and Indonesia—learn from one another’s cultures and deepen their understanding of their histories and backgrounds.
