Exhibition: World Books for Young People with Disabilities

The Japan Foundation is pleased to present the World Books for Young People with Disabilities Exhibition, held in tandem with the opening of the Summer Paralympics in Paris.

Books for young people with disabilities are books created to assure rich reading experiences for all children and teens and to deepen understanding regarding disabilities. They include books made for children with special needs and books that portray children and teens with disabilities.

This exhibition introduces 40 outstanding books selected by the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) in 2023 from 22 countries and in 15 languages. Added to these are books for young people with disabilities published in Japan and other accessibility-related books.

In addition, as the second phase of the Japan Foundation’s international exchange activities through books, following the well-received “Children’s Books of the World Exhibition” held in February 2024, we exhibit Japanese children’s books that are included in the Japan Foundation’s “Lifelong Favorites:Selections from the Bookshelves of Young Readers in Japan” list of recommended books (children’s books edition) and translated into various editions in different languages—a total of some 40 books.

On August 27 (Tuesday), in the afternoon, a Braille bookmark-making event will be held in cooperation with the International Association for the Visually Impaired (IAVI; recipient of the 2023 Japan Foundation Global Citizen Award) together with young people from abroad studying in Japan.

We invite you to join us in engaging with the connections between Japan and the world through books made for young people with disabilities from around the globe, as well as books that have long been children’s favorites and their translations into other languages.
