Public Symposium: A Nation Divided or Reborn? - The Future of the U.S. under Trump 2.0

We are pleased to inform you that the Japan Foundation (JF) will host the public symposium titled A Nation Divided or Reborn? – The Future of the U.S. under Trump 2.0.

Mr. Oren Cass, a prominent policy thinker who has been shaping public policy discussions in the U.S., particularly in collaboration with figures such as Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio since their time in the Senate, will be making his first visit to Japan. He will discuss his vision and new approach for the renewal of the U.S. at the symposium, scheduled for Tuesday, March 18, 2025. The discussion will be moderated by Hirotsugu Aida, a historian of political thought and journalist, whose recent book Why Is Trump Still Supported? (2024:Toyo Keizai) examines the enduring appeal of Trumpism.

Oren Cass
Founder of American Compass, Chief Economist

Oren Cass is the founder and chief economist of American Compass and author of The Once and Future Worker: A Vision for the Renewal of Work in America (2018). He is a contributing writer for the Financial Times and the New York Times. From 2005 to 2015, Oren worked as a management consultant in Bain & Company. During this period, he also earned his J.D. magna cum laude from Harvard Law School. Oren also became Domestic Policy Director for Governor Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign. He founded American Compass at the start of 2020.

Journalist/Intellectual Historian

Hirotsugu (Hiro) Aida is a journalist and intellectual historian. After graduating from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Aida joined Kyodo News in 1976. He worked as a Washington correspondent, Geneva bureau chief, Washington bureau chief, and senior writer. Aida held the positions of full professor at Aoyama Gakuin University, visiting professor at Kansai University. Aida is an author with several notable works on the conservative political thought in the US in Japanese.
