Emerging Public Sphere in ASEAN: Implications for the Free and Open Indo-Pacific
Project Summary
ASEAN is a mosaic of cultures, religions, languages and economic systems. Understanding ASEAN’s diversity is crucial for ushering in inclusive development in the region, as diversity can present both challenges and opportunities. By appreciating and addressing the needs and priorities of each member, ASEAN in cooperation with its longtime partners, can craft policies that are equitable and inclusive, ensuring no nation or community is left behind. Acknowledging diversity also strengthens ASEAN’s resilience, enabling it to adapt to complex geopolitical and economic shifts, particularly in the dynamic Indo-Pacific region. This inclusive framework aligns with the vision of a "Free and Open Indo-Pacific," fostering a stable order.
Japan, is a long-standing partner of ASEAN, and is well-positioned to contribute to peace and prosperity in the region. Japan is known for devising capacity-building efforts tailored to ASEAN’s diverse needs, including infrastructure development, capacity building, education, and climate resilience. Japan’s contributions have extended to member states where initiatives focused on humanitarian assistance, capacity building, and socio-economic development are aimed to continue to benefit local communities. These efforts highlight Japan’s commitment to fostering sustainable development, promoting stability and well-being on the ground. Japan’s commitment to "Free and Open Indo-Pacific" complements ASEAN’s centrality in regional diplomacy, reinforcing a shared commitment to fostering connectivity. By promoting people-to-people exchanges and technology transfer, Japan can bridge gaps between ASEAN nations, encouraging innovation and inclusive growth. Ultimately, Japan’s contributions can bolster ASEAN’s efforts to navigate diversity as a strength, advancing sustainable development in the region.
