From the First ASEAN Symposium on Aesthetics, Workshops and Exhibition

Of the 103 artworks presented in the first ASEAN Art Symposium on Aesthetics, Workshop and Exhibition held in 1989 at the National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, 31 were selected by the gallery for exhibition in Fukuoka and Tokyo. The theme of the symposium was “Tradition, the Source of Inspiration.” Escaping from received Western art styles to pursue their own national identities, the artists from the six ASEAN countries showed how they reflected their respective traditions through art.
