Contemporary Paintings from Singapore and Japan
Facing the Infinite Space
Exhibition

This exhibition attempted to gain a new perspective by displaying works of contemporary art from Singapore and Japan sharing similar levels of abstract expression. On display were 18 works by two artists from each country. The presentation posed questions about the definition of painting through its juxtaposition of the works from Singapore, in which “the leading role [was] played by the violent clash of countless elements in the painting as a field,” and those from Japan, in which “the outspreading color planes... take precedence over clearly linked linear elements... [so that] the character of their paintings as infinite space is pronounced.” (From Nakamura Hideki’s contribution to the exhibition catalogue.)
