Lee Bul: Theatrum Orbis Terrarum
Exhibition
This was the third in the “Asian Contemporary Artist Solo Exhibition Series. Through her installation, the internationally renowned female Korean artist Lee Bul turned the entire Japan Foundation Forum venue into a theatrum orbis terrarum (theatre of the world). The exhibition coincided with the trend since the start of the 21st century for artists to turn their eyes toward such problems as science and technology, life and death, and the environment. In the new work created for this exhibition, layers of translucent objects emitting a murky light in the shape of body parts and organs were hung from the ceiling, creating a spectacular vista.
