訪日レポート
When I was chosen for this program, I was not very familiar with the theme of Economic Security. I was initially concerned about this, but my participation in this program gave me great insight into how the Japanese government thinks about economic security and how it is implemented as a policy. I learned about the Japanese government's concerns over China, especially with regards to industrial espionage.
Apart from economic security, the program also made m reflect on how I, like many Malaysians, grew up looking up to Japan as the best example of excellence and innovation, of integrity, strong work ethics and high levels of development without compromising on culture and values. Japanese brands are ubiquitous, many of us grew up watching Japanese anime and using Japanese products. My time in this program only solidified my admiration for Japan. At the reception on our last night, I expressed the incredible honour I felt to be given the chance to experience first hand the generosity and hospitality of the Japanese people. I also shared that in today’s fractious world, we can no longer afford to cling on to the status quo. There exists many opportunities for Japan to strengthen its relationship with think tanks, civil society and individuals in Malaysia, and I hope my participation in this program can play a role in this effort.
My utmost gratitude to The Japan Foundation for their meticulous planning of the entire trip, from picking us all up at the airport to dropping us off before our flights home, this is truly the most “pampered” I’ve been between all the overseas programs I’ve participated in so far. The discussions we had throughout were also very well curated, and I got the sense that these were not experts trying to teach us what’s best, but there was also genuine intention to listen and learn from each of us too. The program adviser, Akira Igata-sensei, was such a humble, flexible and open teacher and facilitator, it was such a pleasure to learn from him.
I came out of the trip inspired by all that I've seen and learned. It was a pleasure to get to know my fellow participants from across South East Asia, the work they all do is truly admirable. I really felt a sense of solidarity between all of us as we navigate this increasingly complex world.
