For the past 50 years, the Japan Foundation Awards have honoured laureates as diverse as the cultural fields in which they worked. They all contributed with their work to the global cultural landscape - and came from literature, music and performing arts, visual arts and film, academical research, cultural activism, critical thinking. Innovative but with a deep knowledge of Japanese culture, these individuals and collectives have shone out in their resolve to find a way to bridge Japanese culture and the world.

Personally, my relationship with Japan, its people and its culture grew from strength to strength since the early 1980s. I feel privileged to have been given the chance to bring forth, through the constant support of Japan Foundation over the years, film programmes and film publications that tried to chart the multifaceted and multi dimensional territory of Japanese cinema, a cinematic continent that holds so many riches yet undiscovered.
