Japanese-Russian Collaboration Performance of Ballet

Mr. Morihiro IWATA, the Japanese ballet dance who was the only foreign soloist with the Bolshoi Dance Company for many years and was awarded the Friendship Medal by former Prime Minister Medvedev in 2009, retired this summer. On his retirement, Mr. Iwata directed a farewell performance, performed by four Japanese and fifteen Russian dancers at the Bolshoi Theatre's New Stage, which had the objectives of looking back at past Japanese-Russian collaboration in ballet, as well as fostering future collaborations. The performances, choreographed by Mr. Iwata, with music by the taiko group "Kodo", took on the theme of Japan; among them a piece entitled "Spirit". The Japan Foundation provided partial funding for production costs.
