Creative Methodology Workshop by Malaysian Director Mark Teh, Plus Performances for His New Work Fragments of Tuah and Talks for Five Arts Centre

The Japan Foundation (JF), in partnership with Kyoto Experiment: Kyoto International Performing Arts Festival , is launching “Sequence, ” a new talent development program for the performing arts in Japan and the ASEAN region.

As part of this program, we are inviting Mark Teh, one of Malaysia’s leading contemporary theater directors, to lead a workshop on his creative methodology. Mark Teh is internationally acclaimed for his approach to exploring social and political identities in Malaysian society through meticulous research. Through this workshop, he will share insights and inspiration for future creative activities to Japanese theater practitioners, artists, and producers.

Additionally, Mark Teh’s new work Fragments of Tuah will be performed, followed by a post-performance talk.

Furthermore, June Tan, a member of the Malaysia-based arts collective Five Arts Centre—of which Mark Teh is also a member and which produces Fragments of Tuah—will give a talk on the secrets of collaboration among people with different languages and expertise.

Next-Generation Talent Development Program for Performing Arts in Japan and ASEAN

This three-year program, running from 2025 to 2027, aims to nurture the next generation of talent through personal interactions between artists and audiences. It is part of the “Next Generation Partnership: WA Project 2.0 ,” a comprehensive people-to-people exchange initiative designed to encourage interaction and develop talent among the next generation in Japan and the ASEAN region.

KYOTO EXPERIMENT

Kyoto Experiment is a performing arts festival held annually in Kyoto since 2010. Dedicated to producing and presenting experimental performing arts—both from Japan and overseas— the festival aims to explore and create new dialogues and values in society. Featuring experimental works that move freely between genres such as theater, dance, music and fine art, the festival hopes to open up new possibilities through the creations, experiences, and ideas that emerge from such a diverse combination.
