Figures of History and the Grounds of Intelligence Performance and Artist Talk by Singaporean Artist Ho Rui An

The Japan Foundation (JF), in partnership with Kyoto Experiment: Kyoto International Performing Arts Festival, has launched “Sequence”, a new talent development initiative in the field of performing arts between Japan and the ASEAN region.

As part of the program, Ho Rui An, a Singapore-based artist whose practice spans contemporary art, performance, film, and other fields, will present an artist talk and his lecture-performance “Figures of History and the Grounds of Intelligence”.

Through extensive research into historical archives as well as a wide range of contemporary cultural materials, Ho Rui An has explored the formation of capitalist economies and modes of cultural representation in East and Southeast Asia. His work has been presented in the form of video, lecture-performances, and installations. On this occasion, he will present a work on the theme of AI, alongside a related artist talk.

The performance and talk will take place at Kyoto Art Theater Shunjuza on the campus of Kyoto University of the Arts, and aims to foster exchange between the artists and the university's students.

Kyoto Experiment

Kyoto Experiment is a performing arts festival held annually in Kyoto since 2010. Dedicated to producing and presenting experimental performing arts—both from Japan and overseas— the festival aims to explore and create new dialogues and values in society. Featuring experimental works that move freely between genres such as theater, dance, music and fine art, the festival hopes to open up new possibilities through the creations, experiences, and ideas that emerge from such a diverse combination.
