Are topics other than those listed in the "Possible Topics" in the application guidelines still eligible?
In addition to the "Possible Topics" suggested in the application guidelines, a wide range of projects that contribute to common issues in the Japan and the ASEAN region are eligible. However, projects solely focused on academic research in medical, technical or natural sciences are not eligible.
What is a policy-oriented research or project?
Policy-oriented research or project should not be purely academic or theoretical research but should be a collaborative research or dialogue project that aims to develop and implement policies/measures at the local, national, or international level to contribute to solving common issues in the international society.
Is it necessary to have a cooperating organization from Japan ? What is "collaboration and partnership between Japan and ASEAN"?
The purpose of this program is to "support collaboration and partnership between Japan and ASEAN." It is necessary for Japanese organizations and individuals to be involved in the project as cooperating organizations. Projects that will be implemented based on the cooperation of the main participants of both ASEAN and Japan throughout planning, preparation, implementation, and dissemination of the outcomes will be prioritized. While collaboration between Japan and ASEAN member countries is mandatory, projects involving third countries, such as the United States, are also eligible. Although it is not necessary for all 10 ASEAN member states to be involved, we value efforts involving multiple countries within ASEAN or the entire ASEAN region, rather than a bilateral collaboration.
What should we do if we do not have a Consent of Collaboration with the cooperating organization by the time of application?
The Consent of Collaboration is free format. In addition to agreements and Letter of Intent, email screenshots showing agreement are acceptable.
Is it possible to have a commercial company as a cooperating organization?
The applicant must be a non-profit organization, but there is no problem in collaborating with a commercial company. However, please note that if the project itself is considered as commercial activity, it will not be eligible for the grant.
Is there a maximum grant amount?
There is no limit to the amount of the grant, but the JF will cover a maximum of 80% of the total project budget with the grant. The amount of the grant is expected to range from a few million yen to around 10 million yen (approx. 70,000 USD). The total project budget will not affect the selection process, and the grant amount will be determined based on the content and scale of the project plan (number of participants, number of trips, etc.).
How long is the grant eligibility period?
The grant period shall be, in principle, limited to one year. However, multi-year projects will be considered if deemed necessary based on the project goals stated in the application. The maximum duration for grant is two consecutive years. Grants for multi-year projects will be provided in one-year increments. If applying for multi-year grant, the applying organization must provide the reasons in the application for why the grant is needed for multiple years. Projects that focus on events held on a regular basis.
When can I start the grant program?
Eligible projects are those that begin between April 1, 2025 and March 31, 2026.
