Contemporary Art Symposium 1994
The Potential of Asian Thought

Symposium

Against the backdrop of growing interest in the incredibly rapid economic development of Asian countries in the mid-1990s, the first comprehensive international symposium on contemporary art in Asia was held in Japan. Fifteen art critics and writers from China, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Japan gathered for four sessions held across two days, while 200 observers from Japan and other countries also participated. In addition to exchanging information on the current situations in countries across Asia, the participants discussed ideas and cultural contexts that could not be communicated by their introduction through artworks alone, in the hope that the Asian fever would not end as a mere boom.
