The Department of Japanology in the Faculty of Oriental Studies (now called the Faculty of Asian and African Studies), Saint Petersburg State University, pioneered engagement in Japanese-language education in Europe, and created a history of Japanese studies that has ensured its continuation to this day. Our enthusiasm was recognized, and the Faculty of Asian and African Studies received a Japan Foundation Special Prize in 2006, a tremendous honor of which we are very proud. We will continue working passionately to foster international exchange with Japan in terms of culture, art, and academia, like our predecessors, who built the foundations of Japanese studies in Russia. It is our heartfelt wish that each of us can broaden the circle of exchange, making that circle larger, stronger, and wider. We sincerely hope for the continued development of the Japan Foundation as a cornerstone of international cultural exchange with Japan, and as a driving force for exchanges of hearts and minds that promote mutual understanding.
