Asian Contemporary Art Reconsidered

Symposium

Pamphlet of Symposium, Asian Contemporary Art Reconsidered

With expanding interest in Asia in the latter half of the 1990s, there was a corresponding increase in opportunities for Asian contemporary art to be added to museum collections and shown in exhibitions in Japan. This symposium was held with the aim of clarifying the challenges and issues involved in introducing Asian art to such institutions. Over the course of two days, representatives from Japan exchanged opinions with peers from other Asian countries as well as art specialists from Europe and the United States. Although no concrete proposals or protocols resulted from it, the event provided a forum for the participants to recognize the differences in each other’s national situations and to assess Asian art from both long-term and global points of view.
